CHAOS ERUPTS IN SEPTEMBER CFB WEEK 4 RECAP!
-Syg
Week 4 of the college football season officially delivered the kind of Saturday that reminds everyone why September football is so much fun. Ranked teams collided all over the country, several contenders saw their playoff hopes take a hit, and a few new teams announced themselves as legitimate threats.
At the top, Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame remained undefeated, while Florida completely changed the SEC picture with a dominant win over Ole Miss. Oregon also picked up a major statement victory against USC, while Mississippi State and Iowa pulled off huge wins of their own.
Here are the biggest takeaways from Week 4.
Texas Survives a Thriller in Knoxville
No. 1 Texas walked into one of the toughest environments in college football and escaped with a 20-17 victory over Tennessee.
The Longhorns weren't at their best offensively, but their defense repeatedly came up with answers. Texas recorded 10 sacks, including five from Colin Simmons, as the Longhorn defense made life extremely difficult for Tennessee freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon.
Arch Manning finished with 201 passing yards while Raleek Brown scored twice on the ground.
Texas may not have dominated, but winning a ranked road game in Knoxville is an important addition to its résumé. The Longhorns remain undefeated and kept their spot at No. 1 in the AP Top 25.
Georgia Continues to Roll
While Texas had to sweat out its Week 4 matchup, Georgia had no such problem.
The Bulldogs dominated Oklahoma 41-13, jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never looking back.
Georgia's defense forced four Oklahoma turnovers, including a fumble return touchdown, while the offense consistently found ways to capitalize. The Bulldogs have now opened the season 4-0 and have looked increasingly comfortable against SEC competition.
Georgia remains No. 2 in the country and continues to look like one of the nation's most complete teams.
Florida Blows Up the SEC Picture
The biggest statement of the weekend came out of Gainesville.
No. 21 Florida demolished No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28, moving the Gators to 4-0 and immediately putting themselves into the national conversation.
Jadan Baugh was outstanding, rushing for 142 yards and three touchdowns, while Duke Clark added 126 rushing yards and another score.
Florida controlled the game on the ground and eventually pulled away from an Ole Miss team that entered the weekend undefeated.
The win was significant enough to send Florida soaring into the No. 8 spot in the AP Top 25, their first appearance in the top 10 since 2021.
For Ole Miss, meanwhile, the loss is a major setback. The Rebels dropped from No. 4 to No. 9.
Notre Dame Keeps Making a Statement
Notre Dame continues to make the case that it belongs among the nation's elite.
The No. 3 Fighting Irish traveled to Purdue and completely dominated the Boilermakers, winning 49-10.
CJ Carr threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns, while Notre Dame's defense held Purdue to just 218 total yards.
The Irish jumped out to a 35-0 halftime advantage and essentially had the game decided before halftime.
Notre Dame is now 4-0 and remains No. 3 in the AP Poll. With North Carolina and Stanford coming up before a major matchup with BYU, the Irish have an opportunity to build serious momentum before the heart of their schedule arrives.
Jeremiah Smith Has Another Monster Game
Ohio State may have lost some ground nationally earlier this season, but Jeremiah Smith continues to make a strong individual statement.
The Buckeyes defeated Illinois 42-19, with Smith putting together one of the most ridiculous performances of the weekend.
Smith finished with 12 catches for 217 yards and four touchdowns.
Julian Sayin also threw four touchdown passes as Ohio State's offense repeatedly found explosive plays.
Smith has now established himself as one of the biggest matchup problems in college football, and performances like this will keep Ohio State firmly in the playoff conversation.
Oregon Takes Down USC
The Pac-12 rivalry may be gone, but Oregon and USC still know how to produce a show.
No. 20 Oregon defeated No. 12 USC 41-27 in Los Angeles, giving the Ducks another major win and handing the Trojans their first loss of the season.
Dylan Raiola threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns, while Oregon's offense finished with 504 total yards.
The Ducks pulled away in the fourth quarter after USC briefly tied the game at 27.
For Oregon, this is exactly the type of victory the team needed after an inconsistent opening to the season.
LSU Crushes Texas A&M
LSU bounced back in a big way.
After losing to Ole Miss in Week 3, the Tigers returned home and dominated Texas A&M 35-6.
LSU finished with 506 total yards and completely controlled the game after halftime, scoring 21 points in the third quarter alone.
Sam Leavitt threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns, while Jackson Harris exploded for 163 receiving yards and two scores.
Texas A&M, meanwhile, managed just 197 total yards and now sits at 2-2.
Mississippi State Gets a Huge Win
Mississippi State added one of the biggest wins in the program's recent history by defeating No. 19 Missouri 31-24.
Quarterback Kamario Taylor threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs are now 4-0 and have already shown that they can compete in the SEC.
Mississippi State moved up in the AP rankings following the victory, while Missouri fell.
Iowa Stuns Michigan
Iowa pulled off one of the day's biggest surprises, defeating Michigan 20-19 in Ann Arbor.
The Hawkeyes scored a walk-off touchdown to steal the victory, giving Iowa its first win at Michigan since 2010.
The loss was devastating for Michigan's résumé. The Wolverines entered the season with significant expectations but now find themselves outside the AP Top 25.
Iowa, meanwhile, climbed significantly in the rankings after the dramatic victory.
The Week 4 Top 10 Shuffle
The latest AP Poll reflects just how much changed during Week 4.
The top of the poll remained stable with Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame holding the first three spots. Miami jumped to No. 4, Ohio State moved to No. 5, and Indiana remained undefeated at No. 6.
Florida made the biggest move, jumping 13 spots to No. 8.
Alabama remained in the top 10, while Ole Miss fell to No. 9.
Four teams — Oklahoma State, Boise State, UCLA and Kentucky — entered the Top 25.
Biggest Takeaways From Week 4
1. Florida is officially part of the conversation
A 52-28 win over the No. 4 team in the country is impossible to ignore. Florida is 4-0 and has suddenly become one of the most interesting teams in the SEC.
2. Texas survived its first major road test
The Longhorns weren't perfect, but they found a way to leave Knoxville with a win. That's valuable experience for a team with championship expectations.
3. Georgia looks terrifying
The Bulldogs have been dominant through four weeks, and their defense continues to create problems for opposing offenses.
4. Notre Dame is still undefeated
The Irish haven't faced their toughest stretch yet, but they're taking care of business every time they step onto the field.
5. The SEC is already getting crowded
Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are all part of a fascinating conference race. Week 4 only made the SEC picture more complicated.
6. The playoff race is starting to take shape
We're only four weeks into the season, but the separation is beginning.
Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame and Miami remain undefeated near the top, while Florida's win pushed the Gators directly into the national conversation.
Meanwhile, teams like Michigan, Penn State, Louisville and Texas A&M took significant hits to their playoff résumés.
Looking Ahead to Week 5
And now the season starts getting even more serious.
Notre Dame travels to North Carolina, Alabama takes on undefeated Mississippi State, Florida travels to Missouri, Ohio State heads to Iowa, BYU visits TCU, and Miami travels to Clemson.
With conference races beginning to take shape, Week 5 could provide another major shakeup in the playoff picture.
Four weeks down. Plenty more chaos to come.
