NFL Week 1 Recap
NFL Week 1 Recap: The NFL Is Back and Chaos Has Arrived
The NFL is officially back, and Week 1 wasted absolutely no time reminding us why this league is impossible to predict.
From record-setting offensive performances to shocking upsets and dramatic finishes, the opening week of the 2026 season had a little bit of everything. Several contenders looked the part, while other teams already have some serious questions to answer.
Here are the biggest takeaways from Week 1.
Bears Put the NFL on Notice
If there was one team that made the loudest statement on Sunday, it was the Chicago Bears.
Chicago destroyed Carolina 59-37 in the highest-scoring Week 1 game in NFL history. Caleb Williams was spectacular, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. D'Andre Swift also exploded for 124 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The Bears' offense looked fast, confident and extremely difficult to stop.
There is still one major concern: the defense gave up 37 points and 478 yards. Against a better opponent, that could become a problem.
But for one Sunday, Bears fans have every reason to be excited.
Josh Allen and the Bills Make a Statement
The Buffalo Bills opened the Joe Brady era with an impressive 36-31 victory over Houston.
Josh Allen looked like an MVP candidate, throwing for 334 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing touchdowns. Buffalo also got major contributions from new weapon D.J. Moore and tight end Dalton Kincaid.
The biggest takeaway is simple: Buffalo's offense looks dangerous.
Beating Houston on the road, especially against one of the league's better defenses, was an important early statement for the Bills.
Ravens Look Like Super Bowl Contenders
Baltimore didn't just beat Indianapolis — they dominated.
The Ravens won 41-23, with Lamar Jackson throwing for 324 yards and Derrick Henry rushing for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
Henry looked like the same unstoppable force we've seen throughout his career, while Baltimore's revamped offense showed why this team should be considered one of the AFC's biggest threats.
If Lamar and Henry can stay healthy, Baltimore is going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
The Giants Finally Look Different
The New York Giants entered the season with plenty of questions, but they answered several of them Sunday night.
New York defeated Dallas 28-20, and quarterback Jaxson Dart looked calm and confident throughout the game.
Dart threw three touchdown passes without an interception, while Malik Nabers made his return from last year's season-ending injury with six catches for 69 yards.
It was arguably the most encouraging Giants performance in years.
For the Cowboys, however, Week 1 exposed some of the same defensive problems that plagued them previously.
Detroit Survives a Wild One
The Detroit Lions needed overtime to defeat the New Orleans Saints 31-30, but the game was much closer than Detroit would have liked.
Jahmyr Gibbs was phenomenal, rushing for 156 yards and two touchdowns while adding 30 receiving yards. He was one of the best players on the entire Week 1 slate.
The Lions' defense did enough to win, but allowing Saints quarterback Tyler Shough to throw for 410 yards and Chris Olave to rack up 182 receiving yards is concerning.
Detroit got the win — and that's what matters — but there is plenty to clean up.
49ers Dominate in Australia
The NFL's first regular-season game in Australia was one-sided.
San Francisco defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in front of a massive crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, while the 49ers defense completely shut down a Rams offense that entered the season with extremely high expectations.
For San Francisco, this was about as perfect of a start as possible.
For Los Angeles, it's back to the drawing board.
Other Week 1 Winners
Several other teams came away from Week 1 with impressive victories.
The Jets defeated Tennessee 23-10, giving New York a winning record after one week. The Steelers beat Atlanta 20-13, while Jacksonville handled Cleveland 34-10.
The Bengals defeated Tampa Bay 33-27, and Philadelphia escaped Washington 24-22.
Arizona also shocked the Chargers, winning 26-14, while the Raiders defeated Miami 27-13.
And Minnesota delivered one of the biggest comebacks of the weekend, rallying past Green Bay 39-22 after the Packers had controlled much of the game.
Week 1 Winners and Losers
Winners:
Chicago Bears — The offense was electric.
Buffalo Bills — Josh Allen looks ready to make another MVP push.
Baltimore Ravens — Lamar and Henry looked nearly unstoppable.
New York Giants — Jaxson Dart immediately gave fans something to believe in.
San Francisco 49ers — A dominant performance against a Super Bowl favorite.
Losers:
Los Angeles Rams — A terrible showing in Australia.
Los Angeles Chargers — Losing to Arizona was one of the biggest surprises of the week.
Dallas Cowboys — Another rough defensive performance.
Green Bay Packers — A huge collapse against Minnesota.
Carolina Panthers — Scoring 37 points and still losing by 22 tells you everything about this game.
Top 3 Takeaways From Week 1
1. The NFL Is Going to Be Wide Open
There doesn't appear to be one dominant team separating itself from everyone else yet.
The Ravens, Bills, Eagles, 49ers and Bears all have legitimate reasons to be excited, but Week 1 also showed that almost anyone can be beaten.
2. Offense Is Already Exploding
Sunday produced the highest-scoring Week 1 slate in NFL history, with six games reaching at least 60 combined points.
Quarterbacks and running backs were putting up ridiculous numbers all over the league.
3. Don't Overreact — But Pay Attention
It's only Week 1.
NFL.com itself pointed out that the opening week can be misleading, with teams that look great early sometimes falling back to earth later in the season.
Still, Week 1 gives us our first real glimpse at what these teams could become.
Final Thoughts
The 2026 NFL season couldn't have asked for a better opening week.
We saw records broken, contenders make statements, unexpected teams emerge and several games come down to the final moments.
The Bears might be for real. Josh Allen and the Bills look dangerous. Baltimore looks like a Super Bowl contender. And the Giants may finally have something cooking.
But the best part?
We're only one week in.
If Week 1 is any indication, we're in for one hell of an NFL season.
