NFL Week 2 Recap: Statement Wins, Shocking Upsets & Plenty of Drama
Week 2 of the NFL season delivered exactly what football fans wanted: statement wins, late-game drama, surprising teams, and some brutal injury news. After two weeks, the league is already starting to separate into teams that look like contenders and teams that have plenty of questions to answer.
The Eagles Are 2-0 — But It Wasn’t Easy
Philadelphia escaped Nashville with a 24-20 victory over the Titans after Jalen Hurts led a game-winning drive in the final minutes. Hurts finished with 264 passing yards and two touchdowns, while DeVonta Smith had a monster performance with 10 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles haven't been perfect, but they're 2-0 and finding ways to win. That's the most important thing at this point in the season.
Patriots Defense Makes a Statement
The New England Patriots dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 in their home opener.
New England's defense held Pittsburgh to just 235 total yards, while the Patriots' offense did enough behind Drake Maye and a strong rushing performance from TreVeyon Henderson.
The biggest play came late when the Patriots forced an Aaron Rodgers fumble and returned it for a touchdown, putting the game completely out of reach.
After a disappointing Week 1, New England responded in a big way.
Cowboys Put Up 37 — Prescott Makes History
Dallas bounced back with a statement win over Washington, defeating the Commanders 37-20.
Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes and became the Cowboys' all-time leader in touchdown passes, passing Tony Romo's previous franchise record of 248. CeeDee Lamb also found the end zone twice.
The bigger story, however, was the injury to Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, who suffered a dislocated left elbow.
It's a huge storyline for a Commanders team that is now 0-2.
Bengals Are 2-0
Cincinnati quietly put together one of the most impressive starts of the season.
The Bengals defeated Houston 20-6 behind two touchdown catches from Ja'Marr Chase and another efficient performance from Joe Burrow.
Houston actually finished with more total yards than Cincinnati, but the Bengals were far more efficient in the red zone and avoided turnovers.
At 2-0, Cincinnati is already looking like one of the AFC's teams to watch.
The 49ers Are Rolling
San Francisco dominated Miami 35-13 to move to 2-0.
Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey helped lead an offense that exploded for 35 points, while the defense completely shut down Miami for long stretches.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, are now 0-2 and have plenty to figure out after a rough opening two weeks.
Chiefs Survive Another Thriller
Kansas City survived Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime in one of the weekend's wildest games.
Patrick Mahomes threw for 382 yards as the Chiefs overcame a strong performance from the Colts.
Kansas City is now 2-0, but the fact that both victories have required some late-game heroics shows there are still plenty of questions surrounding this team.
Panthers Destroy Atlanta
One of the biggest surprises of Week 2 came in Atlanta.
Carolina crushed the Falcons 34-3 behind a breakout performance from Bryce Young. Young threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns while the Panthers forced five turnovers.
After losing their opener, Carolina couldn't have asked for a much better response.
Atlanta, meanwhile, drops to 0-2 and was completely outplayed on both sides of the football.
Vikings Win a Defensive Battle
Minnesota defeated Chicago 9-3 in one of the strangest games of the weekend.
The Vikings didn't need a big offensive performance. Aaron Jones rushed for 105 yards, while Minnesota's defense consistently made life difficult for the Bears.
Chicago's biggest concern came with Caleb Williams leaving the game with a hamstring injury.
The Vikings are now 2-0, while the Bears fall to 1-1.
Saints Shock the Ravens
New Orleans pulled off one of the weekend's biggest upsets, defeating Baltimore 24-17.
The Ravens led entering the fourth quarter, but the Saints exploded late and scored 15 unanswered points to steal the victory.
Tyler Shough threw for 252 yards and a touchdown, while Chris Olave finished with eight catches for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Lamar Jackson and Baltimore couldn't close the game out, and the Ravens are now 1-1.
Packers Win in Overtime
Green Bay survived the Jets 20-17 in overtime.
Jordan Love threw two touchdowns, including one to Christian Watson, before the Packers eventually won it with a field goal in overtime.
The game was extremely sloppy, with both teams combining for 27 penalties and numerous turnovers and fumbles.
Still, Green Bay leaves New York with a win and a 1-1 record.
Raiders Move to 2-0
Las Vegas continued its surprising start by defeating the Chargers 26-14.
The Raiders are now 2-0, while Los Angeles falls to 0-2.
It's still extremely early, but Las Vegas has already put itself in an interesting position in the AFC.
Rams Bounce Back on Monday Night
The Rams closed Week 2 with a dominant 28-6 win over the Giants.
Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes, including two to Davante Adams, who exploded for eight catches and 195 yards. Stafford also moved into sixth place on the NFL's all-time touchdown-pass list with 427.
The Giants suffered a major blow when quarterback Jaxson Dart left with a knee injury, while Malik Nabers was limited to one catch after briefly leaving with a shoulder injury.
For Los Angeles, it was the perfect response after losing to San Francisco in Week 1.
Biggest Takeaways From Week 2
1. The 49ers, Eagles, Bengals and Chiefs are all 2-0.
The AFC and NFC races are already starting to take shape.
2. Injuries are becoming a PROBLEM!
Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams and Jaxson Dart were among the quarterbacks dealing with significant injuries during the week. 35 Players injured in one week is INSANE. Is this the most in a single week in NFL history?
3. Don't sleep on the Raiders.
Las Vegas is 2-0 and has already beaten two AFC opponents.
4. The Falcons, Texans, Dolphins, Chargers and Commanders are all 0-2.
It's only Week 2, but these teams are already facing pressure to turn things around.
5. Week 2 proved that nothing is predictable.
The Saints upset Baltimore, Carolina destroyed Atlanta, New England dominated Pittsburgh, and Minnesota won a 9-3 defensive battle in Chicago.
Final Thoughts
Two weeks into the NFL season, we're still a long way from knowing who the real contenders are. But Week 2 gave us plenty of clues.
The Eagles, Bengals, 49ers and Chiefs all continued their undefeated starts, while teams like the Raiders, Patriots and Panthers made statements after their Week 1 performances.
Meanwhile, several 0-2 teams are already in desperate need of answers.
And that's what makes the NFL so great: it's only Week 2, and somehow every Sunday already feels important.
