Notre Dame Takes Down Michigan State 27-10, Irish Move to 3-0

Notre Dame entered Saturday night looking to keep it's perfect start alive, and the No. 3 Fighting Irish did exactly that. In a rainy night at Notre Dame Stadium, the Irish defeated Michigan State 27-10, improving to 3-0 on the season and claiming the Megaphone Trophy.

It wasn't Notre Dame's most explosive offensive performance of the season, but it was a game that showed the Irish can win in different ways. After putting up 41 points against Wisconsin and 52 against Rice, Notre Dame had to grind out this one against a Michigan State team that came into South Bend undefeated.

Carr and the Offense Get the Job Done

CJ Carr continued to look comfortable at quarterback, and the Irish wasted little time attacking down the field. Carr connected with Micah Gilbert for a 61-yard completion on Notre Dame's opening play, immediately putting the Spartans on their heels.

Notre Dame ultimately relied heavily on its rushing attack to finish drives. Nolan James Jr. opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run, while Aneyas Williams added a one-yard touchdown to give the Irish a 17-3 advantage.

James Jr. was especially impressive, finishing with 120 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Gilbert had a monster night through the air with eight catches for 170 yards.

Carr eventually added a rushing touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach and giving Notre Dame the 27-10 advantage.

The Defense Steps Up

The biggest takeaway from Saturday night might have been the Irish defense.

Michigan State managed to make things interesting in the second quarter when Cam Fancher scored on a 15-yard rushing touchdown to cut the Notre Dame lead to 17-10. But from there, the Irish defense settled down and made sure the Spartans wouldn't get any closer.

Notre Dame's pass rush became a major factor in the second half, and the Irish forced multiple turnovers while consistently making life difficult for Michigan State's offense.

The defense also came up with a huge fourth-quarter stand as Notre Dame pulled away.

What We Learned

Notre Dame may not have played a perfect game, but that's part of what makes this win important. The Irish were able to win a physical, lower-scoring game against an undefeated opponent without needing everything to go their way offensively.

At 3-0, Notre Dame has now scored 120 points through its first three games while allowing only 23 points.

The Irish have also shown that they can win with their offense, their defense, or a combination of both.

Looking Ahead: Purdue

Now the attention turns to Purdue.

Notre Dame travels to Purdue next Saturday for its first road game since opening the season at Wisconsin. Purdue will provide another opportunity for the Irish to continue building momentum before the schedule gets tougher later in the season.

The biggest things to watch heading into next week will be whether Carr can continue his strong start, whether the rushing attack can remain consistent, and whether the defense can continue creating turnovers.

Notre Dame is now 3-0, ranked No. 3 in the country, and starting to look like one of the nation's most complete teams.

The job isn't finished, but after three weeks, the Irish are exactly where they want to be.

Final: Notre Dame 27, Michigan State 10

Notre Dame Record: 3-0

Next Up: @ Purdue 9/26
