Patriots Bounce Back With Statement Win Over Steelers — But Plenty Still to Prove

The New England Patriots answered their Week 1 disappointment with a dominant defensive performance Sunday, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 in their home opener at Gillette Stadium.

After letting a late lead slip away against Seattle in Week 1, New England needed a response. They got one — and while the offense still has plenty to clean up, the Patriots showed that their defense can potentially carry this team while the rest of the roster finds its rhythm.

The Defense Was the Story

If there was one takeaway from Sunday's game, it was simple: this Patriots defense is legit.

New England held Pittsburgh to only 235 total yards and three points, while consistently putting pressure on Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots recorded two turnovers, including a huge fourth-quarter strip-sack by Christian Barmore that Elijah Ponder recovered and returned 19 yards for a touchdown.

The defense also pressured Rodgers 17 times and limited Pittsburgh to just 3.5 yards per play. Christian Gonzalez had a particularly strong afternoon against DK Metcalf, while rookie linebacker Gabe Jacas added his first career interception.

For head coach Mike Vrabel, that defensive identity could become the foundation of this team.

“That has to be the formula.”

That's essentially the message from Vrabel after the game: affect the quarterback, create turnovers and make opponents earn every yard.

TreVeyon Henderson Makes His Presence Felt

One of the most exciting developments was the season debut of rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson.

Henderson ripped off a 39-yard touchdown run and finished with 76 rushing yards, immediately providing the type of explosiveness the Patriots were hoping to add to their offense.

Having Henderson alongside Rhamondre Stevenson gives New England a potentially dangerous combination in the backfield. If the Patriots can consistently establish the run, it could take some pressure off Drake Maye.

Drake Maye Still Has Work to Do

While the Patriots won comfortably, Drake Maye's performance was far from perfect.

Maye finished 14-of-22 for 208 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. He made some impressive throws, including a 63-yard completion to Romeo Doubs, but New England struggled to consistently finish drives.

The Patriots scored only 13 offensive points, and turnovers remain a concern. Maye threw another interception while Stevenson also lost a fumble in Steelers territory.

The good news? Maye doesn't have to play perfect football if this defense continues performing at this level.

The bad news? Eventually, the Patriots are going to need their offense to win them games.

Romeo Doubs Could Be a Big Part of This Offense

After being held without a catch in his Patriots debut, Romeo Doubs bounced back in a major way.

Doubs finished with three catches for 96 yards, including the massive 63-yard reception that helped set up another Patriots score.

The Patriots need explosive plays from their passing game, and Doubs showed that he can provide them.

With A.J. Brown also on the roster, New England could eventually have a much more dangerous passing attack once everyone is healthy and comfortable in the offense.

The Biggest Concern: Injuries

The biggest thing to watch coming out of Sunday's win is the injury report.

The Patriots were already without A.J. Brown and starting cornerback Carlton Davis III. During the game, Mike Onwenu, Eli Raridon, Dre'Mont Jones, Dell Pettus and Craig Woodson all suffered injuries.

That's a lot of players potentially dealing with injuries this early in the season, and the Patriots' depth is going to be tested.

So, what is the deal moving forward?

At 1-1, it's way too early to know exactly what this Patriots team will become.

But Sunday's win provided some important answers.

The defense looks like it can keep New England in games. Christian Gonzalez is establishing himself as a major piece of the secondary, the pass rush is creating problems, and the Patriots are forcing turnovers.

The offense remains the question mark. Maye has shown flashes, but New England needs to become more consistent in the red zone, protect the football and keep the quarterback clean.

The addition of Henderson's explosiveness and the emergence of Doubs are encouraging signs, while getting A.J. Brown back should give Maye another major weapon.

And perhaps most importantly, the Patriots avoided falling to 0-2.

They are now 1-1, and Sunday showed that the Week 1 loss in Seattle doesn't necessarily define this team.

Three Things I'm Watching Going Forward

1. Can Drake Maye become more consistent?
The talent is obvious, but the Patriots need fewer turnovers and more sustained scoring drives.

2. Can the defense maintain this level?
If the pass rush continues creating pressure and turnovers, this defense could give New England a chance against some of the league's better offenses.

3. What happens when the Patriots are fully healthy?
A.J. Brown, Carlton Davis III and the injured players could significantly change the look of this team.

Final Take

The Patriots didn't need Drake Maye to throw for 300 yards or score four touchdowns Sunday.

They needed a response.

They got one.

A 20-3 win over Pittsburgh, a defense that completely controlled the game and a rookie running back making an immediate impact gives New England something to build on.

There is still plenty to fix offensively, but at 1-1, the Patriots have put themselves right back in the conversation.

The next few weeks will tell us whether this was simply a bounce-back win — or the beginning of something bigger in New England. The next game is Jacksonville at 1:00.
