Patriots Week 1: A Tough Loss, But Plenty to Build On
The New England Patriots opened the 2026 season with a gut-punching 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl rematch. After taking a 10-0 lead and controlling much of the game, New England watched Seattle completely flip the momentum in the fourth quarter. The Patriots now head home 0-1, but this is far from a season-ending result. Just like last year the patriots have to turn things around from week 1, but since we've seen this before we shouldn't be too worried.
For three quarters, the Patriots looked like the more composed football team. The defense kept Seattle's offense under control, the offense established the run with some huge holes open for Rhamondre and Drake Maye looked comfortable enough in his first real test of the season. But the fourth quarter exposed some of the issues that could determine just how good this Patriots team can ultimately be this
Maye finished with 178 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions, with all three picks coming in the fourth quarter. The final interception came with New England driving for a potential game-winning score, BRUTAL END to a decent last minute drive.
Still, there are reasons for Patriots fans to remain optimistic. New England went on the road against the defending Super Bowl champions and had a chance to win the game in the final minute. That's a much different situation than being completely outmatched.
Top 3 Takeaways
1. Drake Maye Has to Learn From This Game
This was easily the biggest storyline. Maye showed flashes of why expectations are so high, but the fourth quarter was a major learning experience.
Throwing three interceptions in the final quarter simply cannot happen if the Patriots want to compete for the AFC. At the same time, Maye made several big plays with his legs and kept the Patriots alive on the final drive.
The important thing is how he responds. One bad quarter doesn't define a season, but it does give Mike Vrabel and the coaching staff plenty of film to work with. He stated that he stopped being patient and forced throws. “Oh, definitely. I just stopped being patient. I think that’s the big thing. We were really good up to the point where I tried to force one down the sideline to Romeo (Doubs), where we were patient and dumping it off and trying to move the chains.”
2. The Defense Can Be a Problem for Opposing Teams
The Patriots defense deserves credit for how it played for most of the night. Seattle was held scoreless through the first half, and New England's defense created pressure and made life difficult for the Seahawks' offense.
The problem came when Seattle finally found its rhythm. Jaxon Smith-Njigba became the difference-maker, including a 45-yard touchdown that tied the game.
If this defense can consistently play at the level we saw early in this game, New England should have a chance to stay competitive in plenty of games this season.
3. The Patriots Can't Waste Opportunities
This might be the biggest lesson from the loss.
New England had the lead, had opportunities to extend it and ultimately had the ball with a chance to win. Against a team like Seattle, you have to finish.
The Patriots also lost A.J. Brown to an ankle injury, which could have a major impact on the offense depending on the severity of the injury. If Brown is sidelined for an extended period of time then it will take a step up from Doubs,Williams,Chisom,Douglas and Mack Hollins to fill that WR role.
Looking Ahead
Despite the loss, I wouldn't panic about the Patriots just yet.
This was an extremely difficult Week 1 matchup on the road against the defending champions, and New England was one possession away from winning. The bigger concern is cleaning up the turnovers and making sure the offense doesn't become overly dependent on Maye making something happen when things break down.
The Patriots now return home for their next game against Pittsburgh. That game becomes extremely important because New England needs to avoid starting the season 0-2.
My early prediction? The Patriots are still a playoff-caliber team. But tonight showed that the margin for error is smaller than it was last season. Maye needs to take another step, the offense needs to stay healthy, and the defense needs to consistently create stops late in games.
The season is only one game old. The Patriots lost tonight, but they also showed enough to make you believe this team can still have a very good year just like last season.
Final takeaway: Don't panic. Learn from it. Move on.
