College Football Week 5 Recap

Statement Wins, Shocking Losses & The Playoff Picture Starting to Take Shape

Week 5 of the college football season gave us a little bit of everything. We saw dominant performances from the teams at the top, a massive upset in the SEC, record-breaking performances, and several teams officially putting themselves into the College Football Playoff conversation.

With the season moving toward the halfway point, every Saturday matters more — and Week 5 certainly delivered.

🔥 1. Missouri Stuns Florida

The biggest surprise of the weekend came in Columbia.

No. 25 Missouri absolutely demolished No. 8 Florida 45-17, just one week after the Gators had destroyed then-No. 4 Ole Miss.

Florida went from looking like one of the hottest teams in the country to suddenly having serious questions surrounding them.

Missouri quarterback Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Jamal Roberts put together one of the best performances of the season.

Roberts rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns, including an 80-yard touchdown run.

Missouri finished with 560 total yards and completely controlled the game.

For Florida, this is the kind of loss that can completely change the trajectory of a season.

☘️ 2. Notre Dame Survives North Carolina

Notre Dame remained undefeated, but this wasn't exactly the statement win the Irish were looking for.

The No. 3 Fighting Irish defeated North Carolina 37-26 in Chapel Hill to move to 5-0.

CJ Carr was once again the star, throwing four touchdown passes and adding a rushing touchdown.

Jordan Faison was Carr's favorite target, finishing with 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame dominated the yardage battle, 475-285, and didn't turn the ball over.

The Irish still have a perfect record, but the biggest question coming out of Week 5 is whether they're actually one of the two or three best teams in the country.

The good news?

They keep winning.

The bad news?

They haven't exactly been flawless.

And with Stanford coming to South Bend next week before the massive Texas matchup, the pressure is only going to increase.

🐶 3. Georgia Keeps Rolling

Georgia quietly continues to look like one of the most complete teams in college football.

The Bulldogs defeated Vanderbilt 38-14 and improved to 5-0.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton was excellent, completing 25 of 32 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Georgia has now won every game this season by at least 24 points.

That's consistency.

The Bulldogs haven't had a true heavyweight test yet, but that changes immediately next week.

Georgia vs. Alabama.

That's the game college football fans have been waiting for.

🐘 4. Alabama Looks SCARY

If there was one team that may have helped itself the most in Week 5, it was Alabama.

The Crimson Tide went into Starkville and destroyed No. 16 Mississippi State 56-23.

Quarterback Keelon Russell looked like a potential Heisman candidate, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.

Alabama is now 5-0 and has scored at least 45 points in every game this season.

That's absolutely ridiculous.

The Crimson Tide's offense is becoming one of the biggest storylines in the country, and next week's matchup with Georgia could be the game that tells us whether Alabama is a legitimate national championship contender.

🌴 5. Miami Makes a Statement at Clemson

Miami traveled into Death Valley and completely handled Clemson.

The Hurricanes won 41-13, improving to 5-0 and taking control of the ACC.

Miami's defense was the story.

The Hurricanes recorded six sacks, forced two turnovers and held Clemson to just 13 points.

Quarterback Darian Mensah continued to play efficient football, while Mark Fletcher Jr. scored twice on the ground.

Miami hasn't had the most difficult schedule so far, but you can't ignore what they're doing.

The Hurricanes are undefeated.

They're playing with confidence.

And their defense looks legit.

The question now is simple:

Can Miami beat a team that is actually at its level?

🌰 6. Jeremiah Smith Is Making History

Ohio State defeated Iowa 31-14, but the Buckeyes' biggest story was once again Jeremiah Smith.

Smith caught 11 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

He also broke Ohio State's all-time records for receiving touchdowns and career receptions.

That's insane considering how young he still is.

Smith is quickly turning himself into one of the biggest stars in college football and a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender.

Ohio State also dominated Iowa statistically, outgaining the Hawkeyes 484-238.

The Buckeyes now look like a legitimate national championship contender.

🚂 7. Indiana Keeps Winning

Don't look now, but Indiana is still undefeated.

The defending national champions destroyed Rutgers 47-15 and moved to 5-0.

The Hoosiers put up 593 total yards, while Turbo Richard exploded for 204 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Indiana has now won 21 straight games.

At this point, it's impossible to call this a fluke.

Indiana is officially one of the teams everyone has to take seriously.

🔴 8. Texas Tech Survives Colorado

Texas Tech improved to 5-0 with a 29-7 win over Colorado.

The Red Raiders trailed 7-3 at halftime but completely took over after the break.

Colorado's offense fell apart in the second half, throwing three interceptions in the third quarter.

Texas Tech forced four turnovers overall and turned the game into a defensive battle.

The Red Raiders are now one of the most interesting undefeated teams in the country.

They may not get the same attention as Texas or Ohio State, but at 5-0, they're officially in the conversation.

🚨 Biggest Winners of Week 5

Alabama — 56 points on the road against a ranked SEC opponent.

Miami — Destroyed Clemson and took control of the ACC.

Missouri — Biggest upset of the weekend.

Ohio State — Another dominant win plus a historic day from Jeremiah Smith.

Indiana — 21 straight wins.

Texas Tech — Still undefeated and playing excellent defense.

📉 Biggest Losers of Week 5

Florida

Going from beating Ole Miss by 24 to losing to Missouri by 28 is a massive swing.

Iowa

The Hawkeyes were completely overwhelmed by Ohio State's offense.

Colorado

A 7-3 halftime lead turned into a 29-7 loss after four turnovers.

Clemson

At 3-2, Clemson's playoff hopes are starting to look extremely thin.

North Carolina

The Tar Heels competed with Notre Dame, but ultimately couldn't finish the upset.

🏆 Heisman Watch

1. Jeremiah Smith — Ohio State

Another monster performance. The numbers are becoming impossible to ignore.

2. Keelon Russell — Alabama

Five games, five dominant performances. Russell is quickly becoming one of the biggest names in the country.

3. CJ Carr — Notre Dame

Carr continues to produce touchdowns and hasn't thrown an interception this season.

4. Gunner Stockton — Georgia

Efficient, consistent and undefeated.

5. Turbo Richard — Indiana

A 204-yard performance puts him firmly on the national radar.

👀 Week 6 Is HUGE

If Week 5 was about identifying contenders, Week 6 is about separating them.

The biggest game of the weekend is obvious:

🐶 No. 2 Georgia vs. No. 6 Alabama 🐘

This could be one of the most important games of the entire regular season.

We're also getting:

  • No. 1 Texas vs. Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry

  • Notre Dame vs. Stanford

  • USC vs. Penn State

  • LSU vs. Kentucky

  • Oregon vs. UCLA

  • Tennessee vs. Arkansas

The season is officially entering the part where one loss can completely change a team's playoff outlook.

Final Takeaway

Week 5 showed us that the College Football Playoff race is starting to become a lot clearer.

Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Miami, Notre Dame and Indiana all continue to look like legitimate contenders, while teams like Missouri and Texas Tech are forcing their way into the conversation.

But the biggest takeaway?

The SEC is about to get serious.

Georgia vs. Alabama next week could tell us a lot about who has the best chance to represent the conference in the College Football Playoff.

And with Texas waiting in the wings, the race for the national championship is officially heating up.

Five weeks down. The real season starts now.
