From Rock Bottom to a Statement Win Patriots Week 3&4 Recap
Patriots Week 3 & Week 4 Recap: From Rock Bottom to a Statement Win
First off, a quick apology: I missed getting the Week 3 Patriots recap out, so we're going to make up for it by covering both Week 3 and Week 4 together. And honestly, what happened over these two weeks deserves to be talked about — because New England went from getting completely embarrassed to pulling off one of its biggest wins of the season.
Week 3: Patriots Get Blown Out by Jacksonville
The Patriots entered Week 3 coming off a strong 20-3 win over Pittsburgh, looking to move above .500.
Instead, New England got absolutely dominated.
The Patriots traveled to Jacksonville and were crushed 35-6 by the Jaguars, falling to 1-2 on the season.
It was one of those games where almost nothing went right.
Drake Maye struggled throughout the afternoon, finishing 14-of-25 for 199 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. The Patriots also struggled to establish the run, managing only 83 rushing yards as a team.
The biggest problem: the offense disappeared
After scoring 20 points against Pittsburgh, the Patriots managed only six points against Jacksonville.
New England couldn't consistently sustain drives, couldn't finish opportunities in the red zone and turned the ball over three times.
The defense wasn't much better. Jacksonville scored 35 points and consistently found ways to move the ball.
It was a complete team failure.
Mike Vrabel admitted afterward that the Patriots "didn't give ourselves a chance," while Maye called the game a potential turning point and said he needed to look at himself in the mirror.
At 1-2, New England suddenly had some serious questions to answer.
And then came Buffalo.
Week 4: PATRIOTS STUN THE BILLS
If Week 3 was the Patriots at their lowest point, Week 4 was almost the exact opposite.
New England walked into Buffalo and defeated Josh Allen and the Bills 29-26, improving to 2-2 and completely changing the feeling around the team.
And this wasn't just a random Week 4 victory.
This was a statement win.
The Patriots went on the road against one of the AFC's best teams and found a way to win a shootout late.
Drake Maye Answers the Call
This was easily one of the most important games of Maye's young career.
He finished with 269 passing yards, three touchdowns and 54 rushing yards, leading the Patriots on multiple long scoring drives.
Was it perfect?
Absolutely not.
Maye had turnovers and missed some throws, but when New England needed him most, he made plays.
The biggest came late in the fourth quarter.
With the Patriots trailing 26-21, Maye connected with Efton Chism III for a spectacular 23-yard touchdown, giving New England a 27-26 lead. Maye and Rhamondre Stevenson then connected on the two-point conversion to make it 29-26.
That was the moment where this team showed a different level of confidence.
Romeo Doubs Finally Breaks Out
Another huge storyline was Romeo Doubs.
After struggling with drops early in the season, Doubs had arguably his best game as a Patriot, catching six passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
His two scores helped establish the Patriots' offense early and gave Maye a reliable target throughout the game.
This is exactly what New England hoped it would get when they brought Doubs in.
The Defense Makes the Play That Matters
After New England took the lead, the defense had one massive job:
Stop Josh Allen.
And they did.
Craig Woodson came up with a crucial interception of Allen late in the game, giving the Patriots an opportunity to put the game away.
New England then trusted Maye to finish it.
Instead of simply trying to run the clock out, the Patriots put the ball in their quarterback's hands. Maye eventually found Hunter Henry for a crucial first down that essentially sealed the victory.
That's a huge step for this team.
What We Learned From Weeks 3 & 4
1. This Patriots team has some fight
Getting embarrassed 35-6 and then walking into Buffalo the following week could have easily resulted in a 1-3 record.
Instead, New England responded.
2. Drake Maye is still developing — but the talent is obvious
Maye is going to have ugly moments. That's part of being a young quarterback.
But his ability to make plays with his arm and legs was on full display against Buffalo.
The fourth-quarter performance is something Patriots fans should remember.
3. Romeo Doubs could become a major piece
The two-touchdown performance was exactly what New England needed.
If Doubs can build off that performance, the Patriots' passing game could look very different going forward.
4. The Patriots are officially 2-2
That's the biggest thing.
After Week 3, it looked like New England could be headed toward another frustrating season.
Now?
They're back at .500 and right in the AFC East conversation.
Final Take
The Patriots' first four weeks have been a roller coaster.
Week 1: Tough loss to Seattle
Week 2: Dominant win over Pittsburgh
Week 3: Embarrassing loss to Jacksonville
Week 4: Huge road win over Buffalo
That's a 2-2 team that we still don't completely know what to make of.
But if the Patriots can take the confidence and offensive production from Buffalo and carry it forward, this team could become a legitimate problem in the AFC.
The Week 3 loss was ugly.
The Week 4 win was impressive.
And now the Patriots have a chance to prove that Buffalo wasn't just a fluke.
2-2. Season reset. Let's see what happens next.
